Companies are migrating towards cloud computing for a number of reasons, including cost efficiency. Currently, most companies have servers where applications and data reside. Most of the servers are located in-house or on another company property. However, costs associated with purchasing servers, switches, SANs, desktops, as well as paying for things like maintenance and IT professionals, can make having on-premises servers and software a costly undertaking. Cloud computing, on the other hand, allows applications to reside in the “cloud” or on the Internet. This frees resources on the operating system and reduces the need for in-house servers, which in turn may lower costs and streamline the budget.

The Cloud and The Grid

There are two competing schools of thought when it comes to delivering CRM tools.  The first is through traditional methods, with software and servers.  This gives you a home-grown on-premises system, traditionally referred to as grid computing.  The other is a still-emerging technology that’s been on the market for about a decade now, and is one that I prefer.  Cloud computing delivers apps and information over the Internet, so you don’t have to worry about servers, network infrastructure, and other things that are expensive when they stop working.

So you’ve heard about this new trend called cloud computing, but you’re not sure what it is, and you’re not sure why you’d want it.  Well, to start, if you’ve used Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, Hotmail, iTunes, or other similar web applications, you’ve used cloud computing.  Basically, cloud computing is a way of delivering information and applications over the Internet.  It allows you to access your files from anywhere that you can plug in, because everything is hosted in a shared data center and sent to you whenever you want through an Internet connection.
