Small Business

Some small business owners mistakenly believe that enterprise cloud computing is something that benefits only large corporations. In fact, the small business often has much more to gain from the cloud.  Since many startups and small businesses are strapped for cash, it makes sense for them to move to the cloud and avoid paying a large upfront investment in hardware and software.

Companies understand the value of software development and know that customized software is an effective way to increase their profitability. However, like the rest of us, businesses are strapped for cash. The Advantages of Database Application Development in the Cloud

CRM

Traditionally, developing and maintaining database applications has been a time-consuming and frustrating process. A good friend of mine discovered this several years ago, when she worked for a Fortune 500 company with its headquarters in New Jersey and 15 plants across the U. S. She was the Billing Manager at one of the plants, a title which also encompassed responsibilities for system operations.

When a new, more powerful system was installed, it was expected that there would be a few bugs. What no one was prepared for was how long it would take to make even simple changes to a database. First, a request had to be sent to corporate, who had to make the change on their system and then download the update to each and every plant before it would take effect. The average time was about two weeks—that is, if it was a very minor fix.  Sound familiar?

Cloud Computing is a Technology You Cannot Afford to Ignore

Enterprise Computing

Companies are migrating towards cloud computing for a number of reasons, including cost efficiency. Currently, most companies have servers where applications and data reside. Most of the servers are located in-house or on another company property. However, costs associated with purchasing servers, switches, SANs, desktops, as well as paying for things like maintenance and IT professionals, can make having on-premises servers and software a costly undertaking. Cloud computing, on the other hand, allows applications to reside in the “cloud” or on the Internet. This frees resources on the operating system and reduces the need for in-house servers, which in turn may lower costs and streamline the budget.

The Advantages of Platform as a Service in the Cloud

PaaS

When I consider ways to streamline the development of customized software solutions, I love the “Platform as a Service,” or PaaS, aspect of cloud computing. With Platform as a Service, the development environment is offsite in a place where you don’t have to worry about keeping the server updated, or installing latest versions of development software. The service handles those headaches so the development staff can focus on meeting the needs of the marketing department.

Demystifying Cloud Computing

Thursday, May 27, 2010 by Sidney Angelos

Cloud Computing

The very term “cloud computing” has left many people in a fog. While it does represent a modification to how businesses have typically utilized computers and software, it really is not a difficult concept to understand. A lot of people actually liken cloud computing to the Internet—as opposed to running a program on your hard drive and being able to access it only from that computer.

Cloud computing is how many interactive Web sites, such as social media sites and free email providers, work. Your Gmail account isn’t stored on your desktop computer; it can be accessed from that computer, any computer anywhere in the world, or your smartphone.

While startups select cloud computing services as a complete cost-effective solution, larger companies may be testing the waters with non-critical applications. As cloud computing services become more secure, more and more companies are recognizing the benefit of migrating towards this solution.
