About a decade ago, CRM systems revolutionized business… Big business, that is.  The programs that automated sales functions, contact management, and call centers were housed on huge (costly!) servers, accessible over a LAN, and could only be updated by purchasing new software licenses.  And while it changed the way businesses approached relationship building, it was also clearly limited in its use – and user base.  Small businesses could not afford the servers (and the storage, maintenance, and staff that came along with them) or the expensive software packages, so they were unable to tap into the advantages offered by the service.
