Application Development Platforms in the Cloud – Why Use Them?

Friday, November 5, 2010 by Jace Modavi

Rapid Application Development

Some have made the claim that application development in the cloud is like a new language for application development. I disagree. It’s more like an entirely different planet. Application platforms run in the cloud have tremendous advantages.

The cloud erases all the barriers between users and developers that were once imposed by the physical realities of computer hardware. The idea is something Plato would approve of. It’s as though the pioneers of software development were, even until now, only working on an imperfect physical product—a product which was, Plato would assert, a bad copy of a higher, purer process taking place in the heavens.

The Advantages of Application Development to Customer Solutions with CRM

Monday, October 25, 2010 by Sidney Angelos

Application Development

Cloud computing provides large, complex software solutions to companies, without requiring them to purchase expensive equipment, or maintain the software and infrastructure with an in-house tech team.
One of the best uses for this computing architecture is customer relationship management (CRM), a way of capturing valuable customer data, organizing that data and using it to improve sales forecasting, marketing campaigns and customer service. What many people don’t realize, however, is that companies’ unique needs can be met through application development—something that was very difficult and expensive to do with server-based software.

Today’s businesses are faced with a reality:  budgets must be slashed as much as possible in order to stay alive in today’s economy. However, it’s a customer’s market, which means that increasingly demanding consumers still insist that companies use the latest technology and be able to meet their needs. It can often seem impossible to have things both ways. How can you have effective customer relationship management (CRM) tools yet still stay within your budget? How to Manage Your Company Efficiently with Enterprise Cloud Computing

Cloud-Based CRM

OK, true confession time: I’m a bit of a slob. I’m not much for vacuuming, tend to leave dirty dishes in the sink until I need to use them again, and I can’t for the life of me understand the point of making a bed. You’re just gonna crawl back in and mess it up again, aren’t you?

When I was in college, my best friend and I got an apartment together. We were just like the Odd Couple—but because we were friends I tried hard to clean up my act and do my share of the housework. Things worked out fine, but I was awfully happy when I was left alone for a month-long backpacking trip to Europe; I could go back to my slovenly ways. The day before my roommate was due to return from the trip, I kicked it into high gear and cleaned up the whole apartment, and he was none the wiser.

I suspect that more than one owner or manager of a business would discover that similar things happen in their absence. If you are out of town on vacation or traveling to a client’s site, do your employees let things slide? Without access to your data, do you really know?

Your Call Center Just Got Smarter: Contact Management Software

Channel Management

Contact management software allows agents to manage data from inbound and outbound calls effectively. Once information is entered into the system, any agent can easily refer back to the information for follow-up calls and other correspondence enabling contact center agents to become more productive. Additionally, contact management applications can also be accessed by other departments, such as sales and marketing, in order to maximize opportunities and see a comprehensive view of the customer profile.

An Easier Way to Manage Your Sales Pipeline

Sales Lead Generation

I have a joke for you.

Q: How many salespeople does it take to manage a sales pipeline?
A: Only one, if you have a cloud-based customer relationship management system.

OK, OK, it was a pretty lousy joke. But you must admit that the “punchline,” if you can even call it that, is nevertheless impressive.

The Advantages of Database Application Development in the Cloud

Thursday, July 15, 2010 by Sidney Angelos

CRM

Traditionally, developing and maintaining database applications has been a time-consuming and frustrating process. A good friend of mine discovered this several years ago, when she worked for a Fortune 500 company with its headquarters in New Jersey and 15 plants across the U. S. She was the Billing Manager at one of the plants, a title which also encompassed responsibilities for system operations.

When a new, more powerful system was installed, it was expected that there would be a few bugs. What no one was prepared for was how long it would take to make even simple changes to a database. First, a request had to be sent to corporate, who had to make the change on their system and then download the update to each and every plant before it would take effect. The average time was about two weeks—that is, if it was a very minor fix.  Sound familiar?

Cut Costs and Carbon Emissions By Doing Business in the Cloud

Monday, July 12, 2010 by Sidney Angelos

Carbon Footprint

No matter what the economic state of the nation, savvy businesses continue to evaluate their budgets and determine ways to reduce costs. Some of the primary expenses that businesses have are utilities and hardware costs, such as servers, switches and other related items. Utility costs are particularly high, because most businesses have excessive server space to accommodate infrequent high volume spikes, such as holiday sales periods. Though these servers are under-utilized 90 percent of the time, they still require energy. This use of energy drives up energy costs. Furthermore, the practice is not environmentally sound because excess energy use increases carbon emissions.
